Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
