‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to scoring with Athletic
Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker competed in England, an young playing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he appeared in the country, against the English side two months later, he scored. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to Manchester to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he scored again. An excellent finish, too. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the forward says, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the early training is ready to commence; following that, the short journey to the airport and another flight to Britain, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for Athletic, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. However, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to make the first team and that proved true. As the child of the ex-La Real star Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his top-level debut in that summer, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in half a dozen appearances between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as something positive because it shifted the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so do everything. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, correct it. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Game time is essential. The striker moved emotionally in 2020, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Particularly after the previous season which, at times, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
